1、月球旅行记 Le voyage dans la lune(1902)
片中的乔治.梅里爱在历史上是真实存在的,1895年电影在法国诞生,而电影先驱梅里爱拍摄于1902年的《月球旅行记》改编自凡尔纳的小说《从地球到月球》和HG威尔斯的《第一个到达月球的人》,采取神话剧的传统风格,表现了一群天文学家乘坐炮弹到月球探险的情景,开创了科幻电影的先河。《月球旅行记》是贯穿《雨果》全片的主轴和灵魂,《雨果》中机器人的手绘的“月亮脸”就是出自梅里爱本人之手,可见上面那张电影海报。

4、39级台阶 The Thirty Nine Steps(1978)
和卓别林、巴斯特.基顿齐名的默片喜剧明星哈罗德.罗伊德在代表作《最后安全》中,扮演一位百货公司店员,他要代替特技演员在众目睽睽之下表演特技。影片也影响了成龙电影《A计划》的一场钟楼动作戏。不过最令我印象深刻的是唐.夏普翻拍的希区柯克经典《39级台阶》,上译曾引进过该片。罗伯特·鲍威尔扮演的男主角罗伯特.汉内要爬到引爆炸弹的总控室——伦敦大笨钟外,双手抓着分针,让大笨钟停下来。《雨果》中这段钟表惊险戏简直和《39级台阶》如出一辙。
5、魔盒 The Magic Box(1951)
《雨果》中,卢米埃在玩具店没收了雨果的手册后,一页一页的机器人手绘图犹如走马灯般变成了一段优美的动画;殊不知,在约翰·博尔廷的《魔盒》中就已经有了相似的方式。罗伯特.多纳特扮演的电影摄影机发明者威廉·弗里斯·格林接过女友送给他的礼物,在翻阅“妇人打狗图”时,脑中产生了电影拍摄技巧的雏形。《魔盒》对斯科塞斯影响深远,在《雨果》中可以发现不少相似之处。

乔治.梅里爱在“运动的图片”中第一次认识到了电影以及电影的“真实”。当观众们看着银幕上的《火车进站》时,都以为火车会从屏幕中冲出来,吓得大声尖叫;在《魔盒》一开始,理查德.阿顿伯罗扮演的威廉·弗里斯·格林助手杰克.卡特带着两位女伴去见识“活动的图片”,同样是所有人面对《火车进站》吓得不敢直视。

火车场景令人联想到阿贝尔·冈斯《车轮》,火车司机则让人想起了雷诺阿《衣冠禽兽》。当然,你也可以说你能看到雷内.克莱芒的《铁路战斗队》(La bataille du rail,1946)和约翰.弗兰肯海默的《战斗列车》(The Train,1964)的影子。毕竟,火车和司机看上去都差不多。
